Faster operation with MAR345S - The MAR345S, a new version of mar345 image plate detector equipped with fast-mode controller, has been commissioned at 16-BM-D station and improved for its accuracy, reliability, and efficacy through collaboration with the original developer (Claudio Klein, marXperts GmbH, Germany). The image of CeO2 standard powder diffraction measured using the fast mode with 150 µm 2300 image mode with 345 mm scan diameter at 40 keV and 290 mm detector distance shows remarkable reproducibility of its image quality compared to its normal mode counterpart. With the fast mode, the total read out time can be reduced by ~40%. The drawbacks of using the fast mode include 1) the reduced intensities by ~30% and 2) the increased peak width by ~12%, compared to those of the normal mode image. Users are recommended to use the fast 150 µm 2300 image mode as default unless there is a reason to use the normal mode. The ~12% peak broadening is typically undetectable, and if necessary, it can be compensated by increasing the sample-detector distance.
